------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ One night in Tucson, Arizona at Steven Eye's Solar Culture - during one of his Community Art Openings- when directed to P.Nosa's Art, a lady commented, "Oh your's is the smear Art, you're a Smear Artist." Instantly and affectionately I responded, "Yes, I am a Smear Artist."

And a name was given. For some time I had been using water soluble inks. Getting the paper wet by whatever means possible: using brushes, ice cubes, paper, fingers and/or anything I could find to spread the ink. It is a great way to get those even half-tones and to let the Abstract have more control of the Art.
I have always thought of myself as a facilitator. To give benefit and strong conscious validation to recognizing what is occurring around us this instant- now. As a drummer, I am reaching for a deeper feeling, coming in traditional intervals like a Universal Icon; impressions understood by all - that here is where the drumbeats lands etched for all time. I believe that every song that can be, is silently always, almost invisibly being played. And it is for the musician to connect or tap into the on-going song and bring it into existence. Granted it is a bit of a stretch, but it makes performing easier believing the songs surround us and are always ready to be heard. It is a belief of no expectations with infinite choice. Drumming merely assists the sound or song others bring to our ears. (But let me not under-play the role of the drums, with their pressence the sound begins to Rock) .

Playing Music and Drawing/Painting are intricately entwined. One inspires the other back to the next.
But I want to get back to talking about visual Art because this is a website about visual Art.

As a Smear Artist I began thinking of other ways to Smear. Then Came The Flowers. Using actual flower petals and crushing them into the paper. It is a joyous sensation, and indeed an Ode to the Flowers themselves. Of course there are many colors at hand (to pick), with special blues that only become apparent when the crushed flowers have dried into the paper. The petals themselves work directly as naturally changing paint brushes. I am continually astounded at the shapes the flowers imprint; I think of it as tiny miracles. The images are mysterious and virtually divine.
...Finding Red. Cochineal is an insect that for hundreds of years has been used to make a deep hue of red. The insect is a parasite that lives on prickly pear cactus indigenous only in the South West of North America. I collect thousands of their tiny bodies and crush them into the paper. Combined with flowers it's an almost perfect funeral.

The Question: Which do the Cochineal prefer? To live their normal lives to die on the fan of a prickley pear cactus, or to be used in ArtWork that will pay homage to their lives?

The true dream is to be sitting next to my SilverBus in a field of flowers
